Bacteria and Parasites in Pools

Each summer, thousands of people visit their neighborhood swimming pools and water parks seeking relief from the South’s heat and humidity.

What most don’t take into consideration is that they might be risking their health.

Parasites and bacteria that live in the water can potentially make people sick.

Only in South Carolina, there are about 6,000 public pools, as per Robert Yanity, spokesman for the state Department of Health and Environmental Control. DHEC actually issues yearly operating permits for the pools and also performs surprise inspections throughout the summer period.

DHEC however, does not maintain a public online database of swimming pool regulation violators. DHEC conducts three tests on public swimming pools: chlorine and bromine content, pH levels and cyanuric acid levels.

“If all f these chemistry measurements are within the approved levels, the pool should be able to disinfect waste as well as other bacteriological hazards that may pose a risk to swimmers,” Yanity said.

“I never heard of any water-borne illnesses around here that have actually been confirmed,” said Ryan Smith, crew chief at James Island County Park’s Splash Zone and a certified pool operator. “Actually, there is a lot of misinformation. In many cases people will say, ‘I got sick at the pool,’ but if the pool chemistry says no, facts are facts. It’s not possible.”

The funny thing is that the bacteria and parasites that actually thrive in the water, are usually put there by the swimmers themselves.

About one in five Americans admit to urinating in the pool, according to a 2012 survey conducted by the Water Quality and Health Council. And that’s the people who admit it.

“No amount of social shaming will make people stop peeing in pools,” said Sam Goodson, who operates a pool in Briarwood neighborhood near Columbia. “Even Olympic swimmers have admitted to it. Just imagine the number of people who do it and don’t admit it.”

Furthermore, according to the Centers for Disease Control, the average swimmer contributes at least 0.14 grams of fecal matter to pool water.

Urine and fecal matter — plus sweat, sunscreen and other lotion — can all use up the chlorine that would otherwise kill germs in chemically treated pools, Goodson said.

When people swallow the water from the pool, they can get Recreational Water Illnesses, a wide variety of skin, ear, respiratory, eye and gastrointestinal infections. The most common RWI is diarrhea, which is caused by germs like E. coli and the parasite cryptosporidium.

In May, the CDC issued a press release warning that crypto outbreaks doubled in the United States between 2014 and 2016, from 16 to 32 cases.

Swallowing just a mouthful of water contaminated with crypto can make otherwise healthy people sick for up to three weeks with watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea or vomiting, and can lead to dehydration.

“Just don’t do it,” Goodson said. “Keep your mouth closed. Don’t spit water on your friend. It’s not worth the risk.”

CDC notes rise in pool-related Crypto reports

With the onset of warmer weather, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said today that reports of Cryptosporidium outbreaks linked to pools and waterparks are increasing.

There were twice as many outbreaks reported to CDC in 2016 compared with 2014, researchers from the CDC and from health department in Alabama, Arizona, and Ohio reported today in the latest issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).

Unique risks, unclear reasons

Crypto parasites, the most common cause of diarrhea and outbreaks linked to swimming pools or waterparks, aren’t easily killed by chlorine. Ingestion of pool water contaminated with feces from a symptomatic person can sicken healthy people with diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or vomiting for as long as 3 weeks, according to the CDC.

In 2016, at least 32 Cryptosporidium outbreaks were reported to the CDC, compared with 16 in 2014. The CDC said it’s not clear if the number of outbreaks has increased or if better surveillance and lab testing has helped better detect outbreaks.

Michele Hlavsa, RN, MPH, said in the CDC press release, “To help protect your family and friends from Crypto and other diarrhea-causing germs, do not swim or let your kids swim if sick with diarrhea.” She also urged people to protect themselves by avoiding swallowing pool water.

State experiences, molecular tests help

In their report today the authors also detailed examples of recent large Crypto outbreaks in Alabama, Arizona, and Ohio. Arizona and Ohio reported steep increases for 2016.

In Arizona, an outbreak involving a Little League team and family members was traced to a July visit to an aquatic center, and Ohio’s report involved members of a college sports team who were part of a waterpark-related outbreak.

Alabama’s outbreak last year was tied to an aquatic facility that was in compliance with local standards, which the authors said shows how vulnerable facilities can be, even when properly operated.

The team also detailed how a relatively new molecular testing network, CryptoNet, is helping states detect and track outbreaks, as well as identify the types that are sickening people. For example, the researchers said Arizona health officials used the system last year to confirm a specific type of Cryptosporidium that spread to multiple swimming pools around Phoenix.

Skin problems

Heart:

Exercise has a direct impact on the heart. As the heart is a muscle, and if you exercise and train it will improve its efficiency and effectiveness for pumping blood. Many things are unknown about the hearts affects from exercise, though I bet you didn’t know:

The heart expands while exercising. It stretches, and when that happens it contracts more and the amount of blood pumped out increases. With regular exercise, the heart becomes larger and its wall gets thicker and stronger. So undoubtedly exercise is good for your heart.

Muscles:

One of the biggest changes in the body caused by regular exercise is to muscle tissue. Active muscles are excellent for dealing with food energy, both fat and sugar. If you are sedentary, the muscle becomes less able to absorb glucose, so there is a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes. It is also less able to help burn off fats, so this accumulates elsewhere, including the arteries, and so there is an increased risk of stroke and heart disease.

Exercise also stimulates the body to make more antioxidants to mop up the free radicals produced through the burning of energy. This helps while exercising, but they also operate against other free radicals that may be created.

Brain:

We know that there is a payback for all the hard work, and it relates to how exercise affects the brain. Aside from the health benefits, there are the mental benefits also. Exercise makes your body produce endorphins, which give you a positive mental outlook. You also benefit from the sense of well-being. Although, exercise isn’t a cure-all but it is one of the key factors in determining long-term health.

Lungs:

Those who train daily would soon be aware that their breathing has become more effective, but only minor changes are taking place in these tissues. The lungs don’t change very much with training. During exercise, the depth of breathing and the rate goes up, and gas exchange increases, but the training effects aren’t significant. The muscles used for breathing grow stronger.

How much exercise?

Modern studies are suggesting a minimum of 150 minutes of exercise a week, broken up, say, into five days of 30 minutes each of moderate exercise. Moderate is the key phrase that during specifically: moderate exercise, you could speak but you could not sing. One of the larger problems is people don’t work hard enough. One way to gauge this is walking pace. Walking at 100 steps a minute equalizes moderate. The evidence suggests you need to do some vigorous exercise, but if you have not exercised for a long period there is no benefit. Do things gradually and progressively. Try cycling, swimming or walking first before running. This will cut down on the risk of injury and avoid putting the system and body under too much pressure.
